CrossRef: Trust and the future of scholarly publishing
Since is founding in 2000 CrossRef has grown to play an important role in scholarly communications. Starting with persistent identification of content and reliable reference linking CrossRef has expanded its services to include Cited by Linking and CrossCheck. CrossRef services enable all publishers - large, small, commercial, non-profit - to participate on an equal basis to improve discovery of their content and add value for researchers and scholars. In April 2012 CrossRef is launching its latest service, CrossMark, which will enable researchers and scholars to quickly check the status of a document thereby establishing trust. Publishers will also be able to use CrossMark to give researchers and scholars extra information about the steps the publisher has taken to ensure the originality and trustworthiness of the content. This is especially important for small publishers since establishing trust online can be difficult.
